Several events on the Thunder Road calendar have gotten even bigger with Monday’s release of an updated schedule. As a result of the recent Casella Waste Systems event being cut short by rain, the Maplewood/Irving Late Models, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers, and Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors now each have “double feature” nights scheduled for the coming weeks.

As previously announced, the Maplewood/Irving Late Models will run the final 45 laps of their Casella main event as the opening act at NorthCountry Federal Credit Union Night & Scout Night this Thursday, June 21. Barre’s Jason Corliss leads the field to the restart, having been out front when the rain arrived during a red flag for a multi-car melee. The Late Models will then end the night with their regularly scheduled NorthCountry feature.

The Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers will double up the following Thursday, June 28 on Community College of Vermont Night. The 40-lap Casella make-up feature rolls onto the track at 7:00pm to open the program. After the checkered flag, the Tigers will rerack for a full round of qualifying followed by their CCV main event.

The Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors get twice the fun at Renewable Energies Night on Thursday, July 5 with “Twin 25s”. The Road Warrior Casella feature has been added to the program and extended to 25 laps. They will then invert the finishing order and run another 25-lap feature later in the evening.

Post time for all three Thursday night events remains 7:00pm. Admission prices will also stay at $12 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12, and $25 for a family of four (2 adults, 2 kids).

Thunder Road begins its busy early-summer stretch with NorthCountry Federal Credit Union Night this Thursday, June 21 at 7:00pm. In addition to double features for the Maplewood/Irving Late Models, the Allen Lumber Street Stocks will go 50 laps in the Twin State Street Stock Series opener and the Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers will have a full card of championship action. Thursday is also Scout Night with free admission for all scouts in uniform.

The track’s annual Kid’s Rides are scheduled for this Thursday’s event as well, as youngsters get to ride around the high banks with their favorite drivers from all scheduled divisions. Kid’s Rides will be held from 4:00-4:40pm.

An unexpected but persistent drizzle brought an early end to Casella Waste Systems Night at Barre’s Thunder Road on Thursday, June 14 just five laps into the Maplewood/Irving Late Model main event. The showers, which were not on the weather radar, arrived in earnest during a red flag for a multi-car pile-up entering turn 1. Barre’s Jason Corliss was the leader at the time the event was halted.

Blake Etches Name in Granite with Memorial Day Classic Win

Hometown driver Cody Blake reserved a spot alongside his legendary father on one of Thunder Road’s granite monuments on Sunday, May 27 with a thrilling win in the 56th Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic 100. Blake took the lead from 2016 “King of the Road” Scott Dragon of Milton on a lap-86 restart before holding off Dragon and Shelburne’s Trampas Demers in the closing laps for his fourth career Maplewood/Irving Late Model triumph.

Dragon had taken the lead from Demers on lap 46 and looked like a shoe-in for the win after sailing away in the race’s middle stages. But after starting 12th on the grid, Blake patiently worked his way through the field. He got around Demers for second on lap 59 and had caught Dragon in lapped traffic when Matt White and Lance Allen tangled to bring out the caution with 14 laps remaining.
